The 10:1 Rule Explained

The industry standard for QR code sizing is the 10:1 ratio: divide the scanning distance by 10 to get the minimum QR code size.

QR Size = Scanning Distance ÷ 10
Example: 3 feet away → QR code should be at least 3.6 inches

Pro tip: When in doubt, go 20-25% larger than the minimum. It costs nothing extra to print bigger, but a QR code that won't scan is worthless.

Tips for Scannable QR Codes

✓ High Contrast

Dark code on light background works best. Avoid low-contrast color combinations.

✓ Quiet Zone

Leave white space around the QR code equal to 4x the size of one module (small square).

✓ Test Before Print

Always scan your QR code with multiple phones before sending to print.

✗ Don't Invert Colors

Light QR codes on dark backgrounds can cause scanning issues on older phones.

✗ Don't Over-Decorate

Logos in the center are fine with high error correction, but don't cover more than 30%.

✗ Don't Stretch

QR codes must be perfectly square. Stretching or skewing breaks them.
